ABOUT ME

pic1.jpg

Hey, I'm Kalina! I'm a grad student training to be a mental health therapist. I'm also a late-identified autistic woman and mental health consumer, so I know that the mental health system is failing autistic and neurodivergent people in a big way. I'm pretty nerdy and obsessed when it comes to learning about autism and psychology and I think studies are cool. But when I'm not trying to figure out how therapists can really show up for neurodivergent clients, I love spending time with my partner Brian, getting in touch with my pagan spirituality, and acting in community theater.

I vote the portrayal of Quinni by autistic actress Chloe Hayden in Netflix's Heartbreak High as top-tier in existing autistic representation. The writers and directors consulted with Hayden to incorporate her real-life experiences of being autistic into her character portrayal, and she even managed to get a Sia jab in her dialogue! I was personally in love with one meltdown scene in particular because it was the first time I've ever seen an autistic person in distress who really, really looked like me. So definitely check out this award-winning show and also be sure to follow Chloe Hayden, who does a ton of amazing autistic advocacy!
